U Wood is offering workshop sessions for anybody who would like to learn some new skills or brush up on their current ability to work with wood.  All sessions are closely supervised and have a maximum capacity of two participants.  The U Wood approach is very much based on learning by doing so you can expect to be hands on from the start.

All sessions include workshop safety, choice of tools and use of tools, aspects of timber selection and finishing.  In the half and full day formats you will also make something useful or decorative to take away.  Three formats are available:

Introductory half day

This session is ideal for complete beginners and also those who feel their skills are a bit “rusty”.

We start with an introduction to the workshop and then get straight into techniques of measuring and marking.  There is then plenty of time to practice cutting with a hand saw before getting on with the project.  During the project work some new tools are introduced and the session ends up with sanding and finishing the item produced.

Typical project:         Book ends or Trivet

Duration:                   3 hours

Cost:                         £45 per person (includes all materials and tea/coffee)

Full day

The session is aimed at those who have some confidence in handling tools.

The introduction covers all aspects of the workshop and safe working practice.  We then move on to look at the design of the project for the day with each participant making some decisions about the details of what they will make.  There is then time for participants to practice specific techniques that they will use for their project completion.  This practice session may involve introduction to power tools and machinery.

Break for lunch

The afternoon is all about the production of the project components and finally the assembly and completion of the project item itself.

Typical project:         Key rack/shelf or Lidded box

Duration:                   6-7 hours

Cost:                         £110 per person (includes all materials, refreshments and lunch)

Bespoke Sessions

For those who are looking for specific design advice, use of tools or guidance on more advanced techniques a bespoke session would be ideal.  There is no standard format and participants will need to bring their own “issues” or “questions” to tackle.

Example subjects:

Lathework and turning, woodworking machinery, cutting specific joints, sharpening and setting up hand tools

Cost:                         £25 per hour, or by agreement for sessions of more than 3 hours
